Breast Lift Q & A

What is a breast lift?

A breast lift is a surgical procedure that raises the position of sagging breasts to restore their youthful appearance. Also called mastopexy, the treatment involves removing excess tissue and tightening the remaining tissue to improve the shape and contour of the breasts.

Many women consider breast lift surgery to:

  • Restore their breast shape after pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
  • Raise drooping breasts
  • Create more proportional breasts
  • Tighten sagging breast tissue after significant weight loss

Dr. Lonergan at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of Delaware may recommend a breast lift if you’re unhappy with sagging breasts.

How is a breast lift different from breast augmentation?

A breast lift and breast augmentation both aim to improve the appearance of the breasts, but they target different concerns. While a breast lift focuses on lifting drooping breasts and tightening the supporting tissues, augmentation increases their size. Dr. Lonergan can combine both procedures to address sagging and volume loss.

Am I a candidate for a breast lift?

You may be a candidate for a breast lift if you:

  • Are unhappy with your breast position
  • Maintain a stable, healthy weight
  • Have nipples or areolas pointing downward
  • Have flat or elongated breasts
  • Have one breast sitting lower than the other
  • Do not smoke
  • Have visibly stretched breast tissue

After a comprehensive consultation, Dr. Lonergan can determine whether you’re an appropriate candidate for breast lift surgery.

What can I expect during and after a breast lift?

Administering anesthesia is the first step in performing a breast lift. The technique depends on the shape and size of your breasts as well as your skin quality and elasticity. The most popular breast lift incision techniques include:

  • Around the areola
  • Around and vertically down the areola toward the crease beneath the breasts
  • Around the areola, vertically down, and horizontally across the breast crease
  • Along the upper perimeter of the areola (crescent lift)

After making the incision, Dr. Lonergan removes excess tissue and tightens the surrounding tissue, reshaping your breasts for the desired shape and firmness. He may reposition your areolas for a more proportional appearance before closing the incisions.

Dr. Lonergan places bandages around the incisions to promote healing. Your breasts may feel sore, tender, swollen, and tight for several weeks after the procedure. Once you fully heal, results can last for up to 15 years.
