What is an abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is plastic surgery in which your surgeon removes excess tissues from your abdominal area and tightens the remaining tissues to reduce the size of and flatten your midsection.

Sometimes you have excess or sagging tissues near your abdomen because of past pregnancies, significant weight loss, medical conditions, or genetics — even after reaching an ideal weight. Dr. Lonergan is highly trained in completing abdominoplasties. He perfects patients’ results time and time again.

What are the benefits of an abdominoplasty?

The benefits of choosing an abdominoplasty at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of Delaware include:

  • Smaller waistline
  • Tighter abdominal tissues
  • Flatter midsection
  • Long-lasting results
  • Improved body contours
  • Better proportions
  • Self-confidence
  • Elimination of skin sagging
  • Reduced bulges
  • Better quality of life

Even if you exercise regularly and eat nutritious foods, stubborn fat bulges, sagging skin, or abdominal muscle separation may still exist without surgical intervention.

Is an abdominoplasty right for me?

Dr. Lonergan lets you know if you’re a candidate for abdominoplasty after discussing your medical history and examining your body, particularly your abdomen. If you’re at or near ideal weight and in good health, abdominoplasty may be the solution for you. However, It’s not a weight loss treatment.

Dr. Lonergan also offers additional cosmetic surgeries like breast augmentation and liposuction.

How should I prepare for an abdominoplasty?

To prepare for an abdominoplasty, follow Dr. Lonergan’s instructions. He may ask you to stop taking certain medicines or dietary supplements, undergo lab testing, and avoid food and drink the morning of the procedure. You’ll need to make arrangements for someone to drive you home and stay with you after your surgery.

What should I expect during the procedure?

During an abdominoplasty, you receive general anesthesia to fall asleep. Dr. Lonergan cleans the treatment area, makes incisions, and removes excess abdominal tissues. He tightens the remaining tissues to eliminate bulges and sagging.

He closes the incisions, places temporary drains in the treatment area, and completes additional requested plastic surgeries before taking you to a recovery area.

What happens after an abdominoplasty?

After you undergo an abdominoplasty, get plenty of rest, eat nutritious foods, avoid vigorous physical activity until given the OK, and take medicines as directed by Dr. Lonergan. You can expect tenderness, bruising, and swelling during the healing process.

Follow your post-care instructions by wearing an abdominal binder and emptying drains as needed. You may need to walk in a hunched-over position initially after your surgery. Any scarring fades over time. After you have the drains removed, healing is complete, and swelling subsides, you can enjoy your slimmer, flatter, toned midsection.
